Welcome to 8th European IFSA Symposium 2008 !

›› It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 8th European Symposium of the International Farming Systems Association (IFSA) from 6 to 10 July
in Clermont-Ferrand (France).

After Vila Real (Portugal, 2004) and Wageningen (The Netherlands, 2006), the IFSA Europe offers a new opportunity for multi-disciplinary exchanges between researchers and players in rural development, concentrated on some essential questions related to the sustainable development of territories : how strengthening the capacities for initiative and innovation of players in the farming world and more widely in the rural world? How renew ing ways of supporting and guiding these initiatives by research, territorial collectivities and development organisations.

The programme includes plenary sessions, discussions with players from the territories, workshops with presentations and discussions of oral communications and posters. Grassroots visits are also an integral part of the programme: they illustrate the contribution of the protected landscapes of the volcanic mountains, the farming products of quality very much rooted in the landscape, and services activities to the dynamism of rural territories.

The Metafort unit (Mutations in activities, spaces and forms of organisation within rural territories) and the SAD Department (Sciences for Action and Development) of the National Institute for Agronomic Research share the organisation of this Symposium, which will be held at the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce (Higher Business College) near the medieval centre of Clermont Ferrand, the capital of the Auvergne region.

›› Nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter au VIII^eSymposium Européen de l’International Farming Systems Association (IFSA) qui se tiendra du
6 au 10 juillet à Clermont-Ferrand (France).

Après Vila Real (Portugal, 2004) et Wageningen (Pays-Bas, 2006), l’IFSA Europe propose un nouveau moment d’échanges entre chercheurs et acteurs du développement rural.
Deux questions seront au coeur de nos débats :

• Comment renforcer les capacités d’innovation des acteurs du monde rural dans la perspective d’un développement durable des territoires ?

• Comment la recherche, les collectivités territoriales et les organismes de développement peuvent-ils accompagner les initiatives de ces acteurs ?

Le programme du symposium associe des séances plénières, des débats avec des acteurs des territoires et des ateliers de discussion autour de communications orales et de posters.
Des visites de terrain illustreront la façon dont les paysages préservés des massifs volcaniques, les produits agricoles de qualité ancrés au terroir et les activités de service contribuent au dynamisme des territoires ruraux.

L’unité Métafort (Mutations des activités, des espaces et des formes d’organisation au sein des territoires ruraux) et le Département SAD (Sciences pour l’Action et le Développement) de l’Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique partagent l’organisation de ce Symposium, qui se tiendra dans les locaux de l’Ecole Supérieure de Commerce, à proximité du centre médiéval de Clermont-Ferrand, capitale de l’Auvergne.
